Move over LA, NEW YORK leads in everything — people and traffic

New York

the city that is well known for its convenient public transport and MTA subway system — is now the leading city in the U.S in terms of traffic, surpassing LA, the 'City of Cars' culture in four decades.

According to an annual mobility report by the Texas A&M Transportation institution, the average driver in NY wasted 56 extra hours spent in traffic ALONE last year. The region's motorists statistically produced a whopping 494,268,000 hours of gridlock. 30% more than any urban area in the country.

Despite that most people in New York City don't usually own a car, this has completely changed during the pandemic. While ridership in NYC metro has cut by two-thirds, during October, New York traffic was reaching pre-covid levels again — and that's only counting 10% of workers who had since returned to their Manhattan offices.

People are still reluctant to ride transit, if they can't walk or bike, they'd find another way. Since this is the first time we've all experienced a modern-day global pandemic, it remains unclear whether this shift will outlast the post-pandemic. Even before Covid, New York City roads were already more clogged than ever with Uber, Lyft, and Via.
